The Transference of Enthusiasm
Maddox Womble —
The other day in Uptown Dallas, I had one of those moments I love—introducing people. A new friend who just moved to town met my long-time friend Jay, and soon a quick story surfaced.
Testing Jay’s memory, I said, “Hey, do you remember my interview 15 years ago when you asked me to define what a ‘sale’ was?”
Now, Jay has been in commercial real estate longer than I’ve been alive. His career alone gives him the right to speak with authority. He turned toward us with a grin and said, “Of course I remember … it’s the transference of enthusiasm!”
Five simple words. Yet they completely reshaped the way I approached work, relationships, and even faith. Jay taught me that if you’re not enthusiastic about what you’re doing—or “selling”—no one else will be interested either. That truth has carried me through countless conversations, helped me build friendships, and reminded me that real influence often begins with genuine passion.
And when it comes to faith, that principle carries even more weight.
In John 17, Jesus prays for His followers to be filled with joy—the same joy He had from doing the Father’s will. He didn’t want his disciple sulking around with sour faces. He told them earlier that they were “the light of the world” (see John 5) and their role was to let that light shine!
Have you found any encouragement from Christ? Any peace in His presence and His promises? Any hope and comfort in Him? Then enthusiastically “transfer” what you have experienced to others—by the power of His Spirit.
As you’ve already discovered, Jay’s wisdom still echoes in my mind. It reminds me that Jesus wants His followers to shine with joy, to radiate passion, and to share the gospel in a way that’s real and contagious. Because let’s be honest—if we don’t act excited about the best news anyone will ever hear, why would anyone else be excited about it?
Of course, when it comes to Jesus, we’re not “selling” anything. And what we have to offer is something authentic. Something eternal. Something real. Jesus Himself!
So the next time you step into a conversation, think about how enthusiasm—your God-given light—might be the very thing someone else needs to see the most.
