When Fear Doesn’t Have the Last Word

Steve Gardner—

Why are some people naturally courageous while others—like me—tend to hold back? Some people seem wired to embrace risk, while others are more careful, reserved, and calculating.

I belong to the tribe that walks into a situation thinking, “What’s the worst that could happen, and how do I avoid it?” My wife, on the other hand, walks in with, “I’m so excited to be here—I can’t wait to see what happens next!” Wherever it shows up in our DNA, I’m convinced I got her share of the fear gene by mistake.

The challenge for us cautious types is this: following Jesus is not a risk-free adventure. I’ve searched for Bible characters who got to live safe, conflict-averse lives, but so far … no luck. That raises the question—how can God expect people like me to join Him in reaching others when He knows we’re nervous by nature?

Interestingly, Paul seemed to recognize that Timothy struggled in the same way. That’s why he wrote in 2 Timothy 1:7: “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but of power, love, and self-control.”

That verse gives me a way forward. When fear rises up and threatens to hold me back from something God is clearly calling me to, I can remind myself: this is not from the Holy Spirit. Naming it for what it is allows me to then ask the Spirit to replace my fear with His gifts—power, love, and self-control.

What a trio to bring into any conversation! When friends engage me with strength, grace, and a peaceful calm, I’m willing to listen all day long. That makes me wonder: could I be that person for someone else? The answer is yes—if I rely on the Holy Spirit, who is more than able to provide exactly what is needed in the moment.

So when the Spirit nudges you this week and fear causes you to hesitate, remember—fear doesn’t get the last word. The same Spirit who prompted you will also equip you with power, love, and self-control to step forward with grace and truth.

And who knows? Maybe you’ll even start to enjoy the risk of sharing Jesus more than you fear it. Of course, there’s only one way to find out.
